“Love creates something that was not there before”
Hedwig knows she is missing something. But what is it? Perhaps it’s a long lost love, a mysterious soulmate — the kind in myths and legends and fairytales that end with “happily ever after.” Maybe its power — growing up impoverished in East Berlin can do that to a person. Maybe it’s not fitting squarely into the gender binary — being neither man, nor woman, how could she ever feel whole if the only word she can use to describe herself is “freak”? Hedwig and the Angry Inch is an intimate musical that gives the audience a glimpse into a single night in Hedwig’s life as she tells her whole story. Throughout it, Hedwig is taken on a journey and transformed and, along with her, the audience is too. We wanted to share with our community this incredible story of an immigrant, a person outside of the gender binary, a complicated, messy, sometimes unlikeable person -- someone who is still deserving of love. What started as an idea between two high school students with a love for theatre and Hedwig grew over four years and became a professional-level production with a modest budget and a 20-person team unlike any other student-led independent show at the University of California, Irvine in many years. It was the first time undergraduates were given permission to produce in the Experimental Media and Performance Lab at UCI and brought in professional musicians from Los Angeles & Orange County to jam amongst students. Most importantly, it was the first time a non-binary character was represented by a non-binary actor in UCI history.
